Third Annual People
Paddle for
AIDS
Sponsorship Opportunity
We are excited to invite you to the third annual People Paddle for AIDS, a paddlesport-based fundraiser and festival benefiting up to 30 partner nonprofit AIDS service organizations in Northern California. The event will be held in San Francisco, California, on Pier 40 and South Beach Harbor on Sunday, May 4th, 2008.
Healing Waters, a San Francisco non-profit corporation, is the host for People Paddle for AIDS. Healing Waters, and the people and businesses in the City who are working with us, are proud to host this third annual event. Through generous corporate and foundation sponsorship, and pledges raised by our paddlers, we hope to raise more than $100,000 which will be used in Northern California to provide much needed grass-roots support for people living with AIDS.
The 2008 event committee would be honored to have your company support your community by becoming a Corporate Sponsor for this event. Your sponsorship of $500, $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000 will go directly to supporting people living with AIDS in our community and will help us to reinforce this event as a cornerstone of San Francisco's commitment to its community.
This year’s event will include up to 200 kayaks and other boats raising pledge money to fight AIDS. Please help us to ensure that San Francisco will stand proud as host city for the 2008 People Paddle for AIDS.
Due to the creativity of the volunteers and the many in-kind contributions of supplies, last year’s event had a spectacular dollar to beneficiary ratio: 85% of pledges collected raised went directly to ASO’s.
Your commitment to the event would continue your long standing support of the San Francisco community and support athletes whose goal is to improve their community through unique types of fund-raising. Your support guarantees your business media exposure, on-site advertising, community goodwill, and other privileges described in the attached sponsorship package.
Please visit www.peoplepaddle.com to learn more about us. I thank you in advance for your consideration of our request. We are available at your convenience to answer any questions.
Sincerely,

ABOUT PEOPLE PADDLE info@peoplepaddle.com http://www.peoplepaddle.com People
Paddle was created in 2006 by a team of kayaking enthusiasts and
experienced
volunteer event managers to be a sustainable, portable kayak-borne
fundraiser,
flexible enough to raise money for any cause, appealing enough to be
adopted by
any kayak outfitter as a turnkey fundraiser. Our first event
raised money for
a diverse set of causes, ranging from a disabled sailor's association,
environmental groups, museums, clinics, and job training facilities for
at-risk
youth. The model worked. People Paddle was born.
--- Our second event,
“People Paddle for AIDS”, on April 15, 2007, was an expansion of the
concept, benefiting
20 participant nonprofit organizations who recruited 117 kayakers to
raise
pledges and paddle for the cause. The event was a huge hit with
the media,
local politicians, and the general public, as well as our 20
beneficiary groups.
--- Now in our third year, we are once again supporting HIV/AIDS, and
are again
hosted by our not-for-profit partner and fiscal agent Healing
Waters. Kayaks
and gear are provided by City Kayak and a conglomerate of nearly every
kayak
outfitter in Northern California. Beneficiaries include up to 30
AIDS Service
Organizations, all of which will recruit up to 200 paddlers total to
raise pledges
for their cause. More than 1000 people are expected to join us at
the all new
after-party/festival in South Beach Harbor Park. --- Look for
other People
Paddle themed fundraisers popping up all over the area, including
"People
Paddle for the Planet" on June 14/15 in Foster City, California to
benefit
environmental causes. ABOUT HEALING WATERS info@hwaters.org http://www.hwaters.org Healing Waters, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, is the San Francisco-based nonprofit host of People Paddle for AIDS. Our mission is to empower, inspire and enrich the lives of people challenging HIV/AIDS through wilderness adventures. We offer outdoor trips specifically for people with HIV and AIDS. In 2006, we are conducting rafting trips on the South Fork of the American River, kayaking trips in the San Juans of Washington, rafting on the Kern, our teen-camp LIQUID, day trips around the Bay Area and paddling adventures in Monterey and beyond. Working with qualified volunteers, we work to provide an emotionally and physically safe environment in the outdoors for individuals to take a moment to celebrate living, community and challenge their own beliefs about their strengths and abilities.
ABOUT OUR BENEFICIARIES In addition to benefiting Healing Waters, People Paddle benefits up to 30 participating AIDS Service Organizations (ASOs). The ASOs recruit people to learn to kayak, we offer training to all participants, their paddlers ask their family/friends/colleagues for pledges. Pledges are credited to the paddler's favorite participating ASO. Check www.peoplepaddle.com for the current list of participating ASOs.
ABOUT KAYAKING Kayaking is a visually dramatic outdoor lifetime sport with broad demographic appeal that includes more than 25 million recreational participants, including a large paddleling population here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Paddle sports appeal to a diverse audience, including risk-taking young whitewater paddlers, professionals who sea kayak to escape urban pressures, families enjoying boating on placid lakes, and fitness-conscious individuals adding paddling workouts to other outdoor sports like skiing, mountain biking, and roller-blading. Kayaking is the most popular of all truly indigenous Northwestern Native American sports.
ABOUT HIV/AIDS Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS or Aids) is a collection of symptoms and infections resulting from the specific damage to the immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in humans, and similar viruses in other species (SIV,FIV, etc.). In December 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that more than 35 million people living with HIV. The vast majority of people infected with HIV remain asymptomatic for years, allowing the disease to spread unknowingly. As the epidemic of AIDS evolves, new pressures are created for overburdened social, health, and economic infrastructures in countries where resources are already limited and competing demands are increasing. San Francisco has long been known for it's leadership position in the fight against AIDS, both locally and worldwide. People Paddle for AIDS is the latest event dedicated to raising awareness and much-needed funds to continue fighting the global pandemic. SPONSOR BENEFITS Click for sponsorship application form

Venue Information -- South Beach
South Beach is San Francisco’s most fashionable neighborhood, dubbed “the Neighborhood that Knows How”. Located just South of Market, it is surrounded by the newly renovated Embarcadero and Bay Bridge to the North and East, 2nd Street and King Street to the West and South. Convenient to MUNI, BART and Samtrans, with abundant parking in the Giants Parking Lots, this is the easiest place to be seen in San Francisco.
Pier 40 at South Beach Harbor, located on the waterfront of San Francisco, California, will host the third annual "People Paddle" on May 4th, 2008.
South Beach Harbor was built in 1986 by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency on property leased from the Port of San Francisco and with funding provided by the State Department of Boating and Waterways. Located between Pier 40 and AT&T Park, 1/2 mile south of the Bay Bridge on the Embarcadero, South Beach Harbor enjoys beautiful weather, access to great sailing and spectacular views of the City skyline. Public transportation, a multitude of dining options, and all the other attractions of San Francisco are easily accessed from South Beach Harbor's location in the vibrant South of Market area. South Beach Harbor is a full service marina, consisting of 700 slips with concrete docks, a 640′ recreational and commercial Guest Dock, Pier 40 Maritime Center and South Beach Park. This event will provide a unique opportunity to see, and perhaps try, this truly native North American sport We invite the community of San Francisco to come see this indigenous sport being practiced in the heart of historic South Beach.

Safety
drill before People Paddle On April 15, 2007, twenty-three AIDS service organizations inspired individuals kayaking on the bay to raise over $22 thousand dollars to help with the fight against AIDS. 117 kayakers launched from the South Beach Marina at 10:17 am, paddled to McCovey Cove, a little way under the bridge and up Mission Creek and then back to a finish line at South Beach Pier 40. All arrived back safely. Sergeant Danny Lopez of the SFPD Marine Unit commented on the “well organized event”.
The event was organized by People Paddle, a consortium of individuals dedicated to combining kayaking with fundraising and was sponsored by Healing Waters, whose mission is to empower, inspire and enrich the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS through outdoor adventures.
Healing Waters Executive Director, Mike Dugan, stated, “This is the first time that AIDS service organizations have worked together on a fundraising event out on the water. People are so excited about having a good reason to try kayaking while helping their favorite HIV/AIDS organizations to raise much needed dollars.”
Healing Waters performed volunteer coordination, checked the integrity of all participants’ life jackets, performed coat check duties, security, provided banking, database management and 1000 other details necessary to this event. Some of the beneficiaries were: AIDS Emergency Fund, AIDS Health Project, AIDS Legal Referral Panel, Asian & Pacific Wellness Center, Bay Area Young Positives, 360 Black Coalition on AIDS, Derek Silva Community of Catholic Charities, Healing Waters, Hazel Betsy program of Lutheran Social Services, Metropolitan Community Church, Mission Neighborhood Health Center, Most Holy Redeemer AIDS Support Group, Native American Health Center, New Leaf, PAWS, Positive Force program of the STOP AIDS Project, Positive Resource Center, Project Open Hand, Shanti and Vital Life Services. According to volunteer event coordinator, Melody Lacy, “The second most exciting thing about People Paddle, aside from the paddling, is the registration and pledging software, written by Dean McCully, which empowers donors and paddlers to choose exactly where their dollars go. This is going to become Large”. The software automatically directs eighty-five percent of all pledges raised to go directly to the nonprofit organizations ‘championed’ by the individual kayakers. Healing Waters contracted to pay all event costs, even if they exceeded the remaining 15%. Thanks to the support of many sponsors and frugal efforts on the part of many volunteers, even Healing Waters will benefit from People Paddle. The sponsors included the California Department of Boating and Waterways, the City and County of San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly, Metromint, Aquan Sports, Blue Waters Kayaking, Energy 92.7 FM/KNGY, Half Moon Bay Kayaking, REI, Sea Trek Kayak of Sausalito, Trader Joe’s Bay Street store and the Sports Basement’s new Presidio store. The historic Java House Café provided a discount to People Paddlers, encouragement, support, advertising and an electrical outlet for the band! The efforts of many created an event people will be talking about for some time to come. Participants received a breakfast snack, designer bottled water by METROMINT and a T-shirt, as well as a safety whistle and other toys, coupons and surprises. City Kayak, San Francisco’s premier kayak rental establishment, provided untold hours of free support and over 60 kayaks at half price to the People Paddle participants. One Brick and Alpha Phi Omega, the National Service Fraternity at USF performed as Dockworkers, carrying kayaks and helping people into and out of boats. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence blessed the fleet as they launched from Pier 40, race shouted encouragement to the paddling kayakers while riding along in Captain Rick Webber’s safety boat, provided special blessings to many individuals, presented awards and led the dancing as Kimrea and the Dreamdogs entertained the crowd after the last kayak arrived safely ashore.
Dignitaries in attendance included Scott Oswald, Jason Chan and Alex Randolph, members of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, who presented Mike Dugan of Healing Waters with a notable proclamation declaring April 15, 2007 “People Paddle for AIDS Day in San Francisco”. Supervisor Chris Daly moved the supporting resolution unanimously through the Board of Supervisors.
People Paddle founders, Dean McCully and Lisa Bickford, and People Paddle Event Coordinator Melody Lacy plan to repeat the People Paddle event in the future along with the sponsor Healing Waters. According to McCully, “Not only is this an excellent way enjoying the beautiful bay, meeting new people and making new friends, but preliminary accounts indicate we raised over $22 thousand dollars to fight AIDS today!” Final accounting due in 30 days because pledges may continue to trickle in over the next couple of weeks. The weather was spectacular and the kayaks colorful against the inimitable views of South Beach.
